Joel David Fynquist, 59, of Burlington, Iowa, died suddenly from flu complications resulting in a heart attack at 3:42 AM Friday, January 26, 2018, at Great River Medical Center.
Born January 22, 1959, in Ames, Iowa, he was the son of Wayne Fynquist and Robert & Lucille Powell. On March 23, 2001, he married Renee Smith Kimsey at First Christian Church in Burlington.
He worked at GE holding several positions for 30 years. Most recently, he worked at Menards. He graduated from Burlington High School, Class of 1977. He was a member of First Christian Church.
Joel loved his dogs Max and Haven, the river, being outdoors, classic cars, baking his famous banana bread and brownies (always sharing with those he loved) and beer. He had a life-long passion for playing pool. Joel enjoyed tinkering on various projects and was always willing to help others with theirs. He loved riding his Mule in the country and at the river. He especially loved his family and friends. He was the life of every party.
Survivors include his wife, Renee Fynquist, his son, Dylan Fynquist, and two daughters, Kya Kimsey and Rosi Kimsey, four sisters, Ellen (Brad) Gehring, Gayle (Randy) Laucamp, Sara Beckman, Mary (Mike) Gates; and several nieces and nephews.
He was preceded in death by his parents.
Cremation has been entrusted to the care of Prugh-Thielen Crematory.
Visitation will be from 5:00 PM until 7:00 PM with the family to receive friends Friday, February 2, 2018 at First Christian Church, 1221 Park Avenue, Burlington.
The memorial service for Mr. Fynquist will be 11:00 AM Saturday, February 3, 2018, at First Christian Church (Disciples of Christ) with Reverend David J. Yonker officiating. A time of food and fellowship will be held at First Christian Church following the service.
In lieu of flowers, memorials have been established to honor Joel’s love of the river with a park bench, or towards the Des Moines County Humane Society.
