Margit E. Schafer, 79, of Burlington, died at 1:06 a.m. Friday, April 6, 2018 at the Great River Hospice House in West Burlington.
Born June 7, 1938 in Guben, Germany, she was the daughter of Paul and Meta Mier Wolff. Margit first visited America in 1959. After that, she wanted to move here permanently. In June 1962, armed with nothing more than a suitcase, a few dollars, and love for one another, she and Hermann embarked on a life journey, boarded a ship to New York where they traveled by train to Chicago and were met by her family for their ultimate destination of Burlington to begin their new adventure.
Six weeks later, on July 7, 1962, she married Hermann J. Schafer in Burlington.
She was a proud woman who never left the house without looking her best. She loved bright colors, big jewelry, and big hair. She loved working as a beautician at Dan’s Touch of Style for nearly 54 years. It was her second home. Margit enjoyed spending time in the sun, riding her bike and serving her family. She was a devoted mother and wife.
Survivors include her husband, Hermann J. Schafer of Burlington, one son Norman (Janet) Schafer of Burlington, three grandsons, Isaac, Henry and Calvin Schafer; and two granddaughters, Ashley (Phoenix, AZ) and Reyna Schafer.
She was preceded in death by her parents and one son, Armin Schafer.
Cremation has been entrusted to the Prugh-Thielen Crematory.
The memorial service for Mrs. Schafer will be Wednesday, April 11, 2018 at the Prugh-Thielen Funeral Home. The family will receive friends from 1:00 – 2:00 p.m. with the service at 2:00 p.m. Interment will be in Sacred Heart Cemetery where the cremains of her son, Armin, who died July 3, 2016, will be buried alongside her.
