Arthur Eugene (Art) Heckenberg, 75, of Burlington, IA, surrounded by his family,  passed on to his heavenly home at 9:53 a.m. on March 1, 2019  at Great River Hospice House in West Burlington, IA.

Art was born on June 7, 1943 in Burlington, IA to Albert and Madeline Mosena Heckenberg. On October 3, 1992, he married Joan (Turtle) Kelly from Keokuk, IA. They lived in Keokuk and later moved to Burlington, IA.

Art went to Burlington High School. He worked for JI Case for approximately 30 years. After his retirement from Case, he worked for Burlington Community School District and later for SEIBUS.

In 1963-1964 Art was on a baseball team called Burlington Merchants which traveled around (he was catcher for most of the games).  They played at the prison one time against the inmates and the inmates watching were cheering for the Merchants. Art enjoyed golfing, bowling, going to casinos, was a good pool player,  and was a huge fan of the Chicago Cubs. He loved to dance and met Joan at Jim Bob’s (a dance club) in Burlington on Friday the 13th of March.  Art had some wiggle in his step. Shortly after they met, he started calling her “Gert” and she then called him “Ernie”. This never stopped.  He loved his family and treasured the time he spent with them. His grandchildren were his pride and joy and enjoyed just being with them and going to any event they were involved in. Friends were very important to him.

Survivors incude his wife, Joan; two sons Brian Granaman (Nancy) of North Liberty, Mark Heckenberg (Leslie) of Stockport, IA, daughter-in-law Stacy Heckenberg of Burlington; stepdaughter Diana Krueger (Dan), stepson Rob Kelly (Brandi) all from Keokuk, stepdaughter Kristy Kelly of  Stronghurst, IL; ten grandchildren Ryan (Melissa) and Riley Granaman, Jory (Stefanie), Jansen, Jonah, Stoan and Adie Heckenberg, Kelly Peavy (Anthony), Kolton Krueger and Brittney Kelly; three great-grandchildren Olivia and Ethan Granaman, and Kasen Heckenberg, sister-in-law Rena Heckenberg, mother-in-law Helen Turtle, brother-in-law Richard Turtle, Scott Wood who was considered part of the family, Sharon’s sister and brothers Lois Shaw, Larry (Cheryl) and Ron (Lolita) Flaatten and many nieces, nephews and cousins.
