Bernita Maxine Stevenson

January 29, 1933 ~ August 13, 2018 (age 85)

Bernita M. Stevenson, 85, of Rural Gladstone, died at 3:10 PM Monday, August 13, 2018, at the Great River Hospice House in West Burlington.

Born January 29, 1933, in New London, she was the daughter of Theodore R. and Margaret Caroline Helm Weigert. On September 28, 1957, she married Samuel Willard Stevenson in Burlington. They celebrated their 60th Wedding Anniversary this past September. He preceded her in death on July 17, 2018.

She was a graduate of New London High School in 1950 and was Valedictorian of her class. 

She worked as an Executive Secretary at Chittenden & Eastman Company in Burlington for 11 years and as a Secretary/Commercial Loan Client Representative at First National/U.S. Bank for 34 years, retiring on June 3, 2011 at the age of 78.

In the early years she was a Den Mother and Boy Scout Leader in Gladstone, IL. She was a member of the Carman Methodist Church but attended the Gladstone Methodist Church where she taught Sunday school for 22 years. She was a member of the Oak Lane Nursing Home Auxiliary in Stronghurst, IL.  While working at the bank in Burlington she was active in “Steamboat Days”, “Firstar Eve” at the auditorium, United Way of Burlington, and taking meals to the Girls at the Y Camp. 

She loved to travel and was able to visit 46 states plus Cuba & Mexico.  She collected bells, antique beaded purses, and ceramic shoes.  She loved working in her flower beds, playing cards and dominos, listening to Country Music, doing arts and crafts, attending the school and sporting activities of her grandchildren & visiting with family, friends & co-workers. 

Survivors include her two sons, Bradley (Lynne) Stevenson of Galesburg, IL, Brian (Sherri Marshall) Stevenson of Rural Gladstone, IL; five grandchildren, Paige and Tyler Stevenson of New London, Haley, Chelsea and Riley Stevenson of Galesburg, IL; six sisters-in-law, Bernice Pettinger and Dolores Stevenson of Burlington, Marie Meeker of Mediapolis, Angeline Anderson of Dunnellon, FL, Nancy Stevenson and Kay Stevenson; and several nieces and nephews..

Besides her husband, she was preceded in death by her grandparents, parents, two brothers, and two nephews.

Visitation will be from 9:00 AM until 10:00 AM where the family will receive friends Monday, August 20, 2018 at Prugh~Thielen Funeral Home.

The funeral service for Mrs. Stevenson will be 10:00 AM Monday, August 20, 2018, at Prugh~Thielen Funeral Home with Pastor Howard Ross officiating.  Burial will be in Carman Cemetery.  A time of food and fellowship will be held at the Gladstone Methodist Church following the burial.

A memorial has been established for Great River Hospice.
