Bonnie Jean Baldwin

December 24, 1928 ~ June 6, 2019 (age 90)

Bonnie Jean Baldwin, 90, of Burlington, passed away at 6:44 PM Thursday, June 6, 2019, at the Great River Hospice House in West Burlington.

Born December 24, 1928, in Burlington, she was the daughter of Harold G. and Edith J. Lindahl Miller. On August 20, 1950, she married Robert C. Penrose.  He passed away on September 17, 1967.  On March 27, 1976, she married James A. Baldwin in Burlington. He passed away on October 26, 2011.

Bonnie taught elementary school at Perkins & Sunnyside Schools in the Burlington School District; Spirit Lake Elementary & Thomas Jefferson School in Newton, Iowa. She was the owner of the Iowa Store at the Port of Burlington.

She was a 1946 graduate of Burlington High School. She received her Bachelor and Masters Degrees from the University of Iowa.

Bonnie was a member of Christ Episcopal Church. She was a member of the Burlington Rotary Club, Hetta Gilbert Auxiliary, Des Moines County Historical Society, Burlington Golf Club, the University of Iowa Scottish Highlanders, Phi Beta Kappa and Kappa Alpha Theta, former associate member of the Burlington Fine Arts League and former member of the Carthage Lake Club. She was also very active with the Greater Burlington Partnership. She was a big Hawkeye fan and enjoyed golfing, hunting, fishing, ice fishing, bridge and mah jongg. Aunt B made her Christmas gifts for her six nieces and nephews all by hand. She really put her all into the clubs and organizations that she was a part of.

Survivors include her niece, Cathy (Bruce) Bosley of CO, niece, Annastacia (David) Cowles of Decorah, niece, Chris (Mike) Cowles-Collentine of Burlington, nephew, David (Anita) Cowles of Michigan, niece, Molly Smith of Minnesota, one sister-in-law, Linda Wilson of Illinois; several great-nieces and nephews, and several great-great-nieces and nephews.

She was preceded in death by her two husbands, parents, one sister, Betty M. Cowles, and one nephew, Jamie Cowles.

Cremation has been entrusted to the care of Prugh~Thielen Crematory.

The memorial service for Bonnie will be 1:00 PM Friday, June 14, 2019, at Christ Episcopal Church with Father Carl Mann officiating. 

In lieu of flowers, memorials have been established for Christ Episcopal Church, the Des Moines County Humane Society and Great River Hospice
