Elmer Pollpeter

July 26, 1933 ~ April 29, 2019 (age 85)

Elmer Joseph Pollpeter, 85, of Burlington, died Monday, April 29, 2019, at the Great River Hospice House in West Burlington.

Born July 26, 1933, in West Point, he was the son of August and Minnie Lohman Pollpeter. On June 17, 1961, he married Annette Mildred Stenger in Sacred Heart Church in Fort Madison. 

Elmer was an industrial engineer for Mason & Hanger for 32 1/2 years and retired in 1992 as a development manager. He sold Knights of Columbus Insurance from 1992-1999.

He was a graduate of St. Mary High School in West Point and Iowa State University with a Bachelor of Science in Industrial Engineering. 

He was a U.S. Air Force Veteran, serving during the Korean War from 1952 until 1955.

He was a member of Knights of Columbus 568, serving in all capacities including Grand Knight (and all positions leading up to Grand Knight), Faithful Navigator of Mackin Assembly 261 (4th Degree), District Deputy, and was a Black Knight pallbearer.  He was also a member of Engineers Club, Toastmasters, Iowa State University's Newman Club, and president of the Home & School Association. He was a KCDM LPFM (98.3) past president and board member and was instrumental in bringing the Catholic radio station to Burlington. He was a licensed pilot and enjoyed traveling, gardening, and visiting with family.  He was a member of Divine Mercy Parish and was very active in the Burlington Area Catholic School system, God's Portion Day, and volunteered his time with St. Vincent de Paul pantry.

Survivors include his wife, Annette; one son, Nathan (Darja) Pollpeter of Amsterdam, Netherlands; four daughters, Cindy (Randy) Gunter of New Glarus, WI, Joan (Tony) Stewart of Naples, FL, Rosalie (Steve) Pappas of Greenwood, IN, and Greta (Tony) Mansour of Brooklyn, NY; nine grandchildren; one great-grandchild; three brothers, Ralph Pollpeter of Bloomington, IL, Dennis Pollpeter of Fort Madison, Donald Pollpeter of West Point; and many nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by his parents, one daughter, Karen Brzostoski, and two sisters, Marjorie Johnson and Sr. Ann Pollpeter, FSPA.

Visitation will be from noon until 7:00 PM, with the family to receive friends following a 4:00 PM Knights of Columbus Christian Hope Rosary Service, on Thursday, May 2, 2019, at Prugh~Thielen Funeral Home.

The Funeral Mass of the Resurrection will be 10:00 AM Friday, May 3, 2019, at Divine Mercy Parish-SS. Mary and Patrick Catholic Church, West Burlington with Rev. Father Daniel R Dorau as the Celebrant.  Music will be provided by Elmer’s daughter Joan Stewart, violinist, and the Des Moines County Resurrection Choir.  Burial will be in Sacred Heart Cemetery.  Full military honors will be rendered by the Burlington Area Veterans Honor Guard.  A time of food and fellowship will be held in the community room at St. Mary's Parish Center following the burial.

A memorial has been established for KCDM Catholic Radio.
