Mary Kathleen Simms, 93, of Burlington, passed away at 5:13 PM Friday, August 23, 2019, at the Great River Klein Center in West Burlington.
Born May 8, 1926, in Iowa, she was the daughter of Emmett Bernard and Edith Walker McCormick. In 1948, she married Leland Charles Olson at St. Alphonsus Church in Mt. Pleasant. Leland passed away on November 2, 1959. On May 12, 1962, she married Joseph Simms in Burlington. Joseph passed away on August 10, 1989.
She was a member of SS Mary and Patrick Catholic Church, she was a part of Catholic Altar, Rosary Society, and Legion of Mary within the church. Kathleen enjoyed music, dancing and biking. She traveled to Ireland, Rome, Holy Land and taking cruises. Kathleen was an avid Chicago Cubs and an Iowa Hawkeye fan. The greatest joy in her life was her family.
Survivors include her children, Annette (Greg) Champagne of Northbrook, IL, Julie (Jeff Messerer) Olson of Chicago, Kelly (Kirk) Henry of Mediapolis, Michael (Melanie) Simms of Naperville, IL, Paula (Craig) Swygard of Iowa City and David (Ophelia) Simms of Urbandale; one brother, Eugene (Mary Ann) McCormick of Mt. Pleasant; six grandchildren: Erin, Rachel, Nathan, Matthew, Amanda and Claire; four great-grandchildren: Andrew, Connor, Brady, Molly and another one on the way.
Besides her two husbands, she was preceded in death by her parents, one brother, Donald McCormick, and one half-brother, James O'Connor.
Visitation will be from noon until 7:00 PM with the family to receive friends following a 4:00 PM Rosary Service until 7:00 PM Tuesday, August 27, 2019, at Prugh's Chapel, downtown.
The Funeral Mass of the Resurrection for Kathleen will be 10:00 AM Wednesday, August 28, 2019, at Divine Mercy Parish-SS. Mary and Patrick Catholic Church, West Burlington with Very Rev. Father Marty Goetz as the Celebrant. Music will be provided by the Des Moines County Resurrection Choir. Burial will be in Sacred Heart Cemetery. A time of food and fellowship will be held at the SS. Mary and Patrick Church Hall following the burial.
In lieu of flowers, memorials have been established for the Great River Klein Center and R.S.V.P. of Burlington. Memorials can be mailed to Prugh Funeral Service in memory of Mary Kathleen Simms.
