Mike Westlake

September 10, 1943 ~ March 1, 2019 (age 75)

Mike Westlake, 75, of Burlington, died at 5:13 pm Friday, March 1, 2019, at the OakView Nursing Home and Rehabilitation in Burlington.

Born September 10, 1943, in Macomb, IL, he was the son of Wayne R. and Doris A. Walker Westlake. On March 1, 2005, he married Lawanna "Sammie" L. Hensley on the beach in Key West, FL.

Mike worked for the City of Burlington, The Som where he made the very first Som burger, Hyvee, Met Life, JI Case, IAAAP, Champion Spark Plug, delivered beer, Oakville feed and grain driver, Wunderlich Plumbing & Excavating driver and bartended nights at Arian and local establishments.

He graduated from Burlington High School in 1961 and attended SCC for Liberal Arts.

He was a U.S. Navy Veteran, serving from August 17, 1964 until January 26, 1968. He was a Quarter Master III, served in the Vietnam War and received the National Defense Service Medal and the Vietnam Service medal with one bronze star.

Mike enjoyed playing pool and cards, golfing, rooting on the Hawkeyes, watching baseball, golf, football and NASCAR. He loved the river, boating, bonfires, hunting, fishing, drinking beer, grilling, smoking turkeys, zip lining. Mike loved visiting and laughing with friends on sandbars, Sunday morning drives with Sammie, working crosswords, telling stories, traveling internationally and spending quality time with family and nature.

Survivors include wife, Lawanna "Sammie" L. Westlake of Burlington, two daughters, LaDana (Justin) Wunderlich and Tricia (Dave) Durbala both of Burlington, one son, Rick Westlake of Burlington; three grandchildren, Lane (Michael) Wunderlich, Fischer Durbala and Gretchen Durbala; one sister, Margie (Paul) Vorwerk of Burlington, one brother, Mark (Lynn) Westlake of Muscatine, IA; three sister-in-laws, LaDonna Pica, Debbie Raymond and Roxanne Courson all of Galesburg, one brother-in-law, Jim Hensley; many nieces, nephews, aunts, uncles and cousins.

Besides his parents, Mike was preceded in death by one infant brother, Roger and Kenneth "Kenny" Westlake.

Cremation has been entrusted to the care of Prugh~Thielen Crematory.

A celebration of life will be held at a later date.

A memorial has been established.
