Betty J. Leatherman, 90, of Burlington, died at 1:30 AM Friday, January 24, 2020, at the Great River Hospice House in West Burlington.
Born September 17, 1929, in Winston Salem, NC, she was the daughter of Calvin Lyman and Lexie Viola McCoy Roland. On October 25, 1947, she married Earnest Carl Leatherman in Franklin, NC. He passed April 30, 2012.
Betty was a homemaker.
She was a 1947 graduate of Franklin High School in Franklin, NC.
Betty was a devout Baptist. She was very involved with her church as a deacon's wife, serving as a Sunday School teacher and choir member. She was a talented seamstress as well as pianist. She was very involved with music from a young age and was part of "family band" singing alto. Betty was an excellent cook, her specialties were green bean casserole and her homemade yam dish. She also enjoyed baking and making her own candy.
Survivors include her daughter, Brenda "Kara" (Dave) Steward of Burlington; granddaughter, Deborah (Shane) Morgan of Fountain Inn, SC; sister, Edwina Hall of Renton, WA; brother-in-law, Roger (Alice) Leatherman of London, KY; sister-in-law, Frankie Fagan of Battle Creek, MI; and several nieces and nephews.
She was preceded in death by her parents and three brothers.
Cremation has been entrusted to the care of Prugh Crematory.
Services will be held at a later date in South Carolina.
In lieu of flowers, a memorial has been established for the Lee Road Baptist Church in Taylors, South Carolina (1503 E. Lee Rd. Taylors, SC 29687).
