Les D. Waddell, 74, of West Burlington, died on his birthday at 3:11 PM Friday, May 15, 2020, at the Great River Hospice House.
Les was actually born on March 19, 1946, in Burlington, but, for all who knew him, every day was his birthday. He was the son of Eule Waddell and Phyllis Drain Petersen. On February 14, 1997, he married Josette Walker in Burlington.
Les enlisted in the Navy on his 17th birthday in 1963. He served during the Vietnam War and was honorably discharged from active duty in April of 1966. After returning home, he joined the Naval Reserve, and later the Army National Guard.
Following his service to our country, Les worked as a truck driver for Gleason's in Fort Madison for many years. He later worked for the Iowa Department of Corrections until he retired after 22 years.
He was a member of the V.F.W., a Mason and a member of the York Rite. He enjoyed fishing, hunting and playing chess with his sons, shooting pool, playing darts, and organizing the Walker-Waddell Annual Golf Challenge.
Survivors include wife, Josette; two sons, Lance (Chanda) Waddell of Fort Wayne, IN, and Lane Waddell of Hopkinsville, KY; five step-children, Jackie (Andrew) Guidi of Chico, CA, Jason Fellows of Eau Claire, WI, Eric Brown of Burlington, Stephanie (Dylan) Boecker of Hartford, IA, and Christina (Aaron) Podasksi of Cedar Falls, IA; eight grandchildren, one brother, Larry Waddell of Monmouth, IL; one sister, Lucia Peterson of Burlington; two brother-in-laws, Bob (Cindy) Walker and Daryl Walker; 10 nieces and nephews.
He is preceded in death by his parents and one nephew, Darren LaVeine.
Cremation has been entrusted to the care of Prugh Crematory.
Per his request, there will be no visitation or services.
