David Austin Stiefel, 79, of Burlington, succumbed to a lengthy battle with Parkinson’s Disease at 9:10 a.m. on Tuesday, May 7, 2019, at OakView Nursing Home and Rehabilitation in Burlington, Iowa.
He was born on May 22, 1939 in Fort Madison, Iowa, to Ray F. and Mary L. (Storms) Stiefel. On June 2, 1962, he married Marcia Ann Gordon of Fort Madison, Iowa, and they had two children, Steven and Cynthia.
“Mr. Stiefel,” as he was known by many, worked for Burlington Community Schools for 22 years as a principal and mathematics specialist until his retirement in 1997. Prior to that he taught geography in Fort Madison, and he was the Pleasant Hills K-8 School Principal. He also coached middle-school basketball and football in Fort Madison and Burlington. In addition, he worked in the family lumber business at Building Materials, and later became president of Pioneer Lumber Company. He also owned Nature’s Corner with his wife Marcia.
David was a life-long member of the First Presbyterian Church in Fort Madison, and he was also a member of Rotary Club, Eagles, Moose, Elks, as well as the Masons, Shriners, and the Burlington Golf Club. Later in life, he was very active in the Fort Madison Athletic Hall of Fame, where he was awarded for his distinguished service.
He earned a bachelor’s degree in history from Iowa Wesleyan College in Mount Pleasant, and a master’s degree in education administration from Western Illinois University, as well as considerable coursework beyond his degrees. He also served in the U.S. Army Reserve.
David had an uncanny memory, and even when he had difficulty speaking during the last few years of his life, he could recall events that his friends and family could not. He was the unrivaled trivia champion of the assisted-living facility where he lived for several years.
Earlier in life, he gained a reputation among his family for his gardening, his carpentry, his sense of direction, and his mastery of the remote control.
Survivors include his wife, Marcia, of Burlington, Iowa, Steven of Los Angeles, California, Cynthia (Lonnie) Schuyler of Burlington, grandson Thomas, granddaughter Cassandra, brother Roger (Susan) of Naples, Florida, sister Pat (Keith) Geddis of Centennial, Colorado, and many nieces and nephews.
He was preceded in death by his parents, a sister Susan (1937), and the beloved family dog Cinnamon.
A celebration of life toast will be held at The Drake Restaurant in Burlington on May 10, 2019 from 6 to 8 p.m. And a private burial will be held at Hillcrest Memorial Park Cemetery in Fort Madison.
The memorial service for David will be at Union Presbyterian Church at 719 Avenue F in Fort Madison, Iowa, on May 11, 2019 at 11 a.m. with the Reverend Debra Kinney and Reverend Nancy Love officiating.
