Mark J. Grothe, 89, of Burlington, died at 5:00 am Saturday, July 18, 2020, at his home surrounded by his daughters.
Born February 22, 1931, in Burlington, IA, he was the son of Ralph Charles and Johanna Cordula (Albrecht) Grothe. On August 30, 1958, he married Mariann Chubb in Washington, Iowa. She later passed on August 31, 2017.
He worked as a storage operator for Iowa Army Ammunition Plant for 38 years, retiring March 28, 1996.
He was a U.S. Marines Veteran, serving during the Korean War from January 30, 1951 until December 11, 1953.
He was a member of Divine Mercy Catholic Parish. He was a member of the Knights of Columbus #568 and St. Vincent de Paul Society. He was an avid Chicago Cubs and Bears fan, and rooted for the Fighting Irish and Iowa Hawkeyes as well. He was a very generous and giving individual volunteering at several places throughout his life including; Notre Dame High School, Snake Alley Criterium, 6th Street Cemetery, and the St. Vincent de Paul Food Pantry. Mark loved to walk and ride his bike around town, and enjoyed tinkering and fixing bicycles in his spare time. Most of all he loved spending time with his family.
Survivors include four daughters, Annmarie (Kirk) Daily of Ottumwa, IA, Lisa Jo (Mike) Walter of Burlington, Gina Kay (Michael) Frost of Des Moines, IA, and Angela (Trevor) Wiemann of Burlington; five grandchildren, Brendan (Emma) Daily, Connor Daily, Audrey Walter, Cooper Wiemann, and Bailey Wiemann; one great-grandson Declan Daily and one great-granddaughter on the way; two brothers, Leo (Sandra) Grothe of Palm Beach Gardens, FL, and David (Barbara) Grothe of Bettendorf, IA; one sister-in-law, Nancy (Joel) Miller of Milton, FL; as well as several nieces and nephews.
Besides his wife, he was preceded in death by his parents; six sisters, Helen Mary Grothe, Virginia Timmerman, Frances Bruce, Mary Walgren, Joanne Eklund, and Catherine (Kay) Fisher; one brother, James Grothe; and his stepmother, Olga Fitchner.
Visitation will be from 12:00 PM until 7:00 PM with the family to receive friends following a 5:30 PM Rosary Service until 7:00 PM Wednesday, July 22, 2020, at Prugh~Thielen Funeral Home.
The Funeral Mass of the Resurrection for Mr. Grothe will be 10:00 AM Thursday, July 23, 2020, at Divine Mercy Parish-St. John the Baptist Catholic Church with Very Rev. Fr. Marty Goetz as the Celebrant. Burial will be in Sacred Heart Cemetery. Full military honors will be rendered by the Hamilton Walters Marine Corps League.
Due to the growing concerns regarding COVID-19, no luncheon will be held following the service. Funeral attendees are strongly encouraged to wear face masks and practice social distancing.
In lieu of flowers, a memorial has been established for the St. Vincent de Paul Food Pantry as well as Great River Hospice.
