Obituary

Nelson Howard Showalter, 77, of Burlington, Iowa died at 12:40 AM Friday, November 6, 2020, at his home in the arms of his wife, after a short battle with cancer.

Born January 15, 1943, in Kansas City, KS, he was the son of Leonard and Shirley Winner Showalter. On February 14, 1983, he married Mary Ann Thomas at First Christian Church at the top of Snake Alley in Burlington, Iowa.

He attended Lincoln Grade School and graduated from Ottawa High School, Ottawa, Kansas. He attended Emporia State Teachers College, American Press Institute, and S.W. Bell School for Yellow Pages.

He was in the Kansas Air National Guard, starting in recon photography and advanced to Staff Sergeant in the Raggedy Ass Militia Company.

Nelson worked many jobs in the newspaper industry. In 1962 he worked for the Ottawa Herald as a Classified Ad Salesman. From 1964 to 1969, he started as an Outside Sales Rep. in Hutchinson, KS and moved to the Yellow Pages in 1969. Nelson then became the Ottawa Herald Circulation Manager in 1970. In 1972, he moved to the Salina Journal as an Outside Sales Rep. The year of 1974, he moved and became an Ad Manager in Chanute, KS. Nelson then moved to Burlington, IA and worked for The Hawk Eye Newspaper from 1975 to 2003 as an Ad Director until his retirement on January 15, 2003, which was also his birthday. 

Nelson enjoyed raising, training, and showing Paint Horses. He loved the family participation in his hobby, playing golf with his wife, Mary Ann, and customizing golf carts. He enjoyed trap shooting at home with family and friends and playing Words with Friends everyday. Nelson loved driving his 2011 SS Magoo Camaro Convertible to different places like wineries, out of town casinos and just enjoying the countryside with Mary Ann. They also visited all 50 states, multiple places around the world and going on many cruises. Nelson and Mary Ann enjoyed singing Karaoke and dancing. 

Nelson will be remembered for always having a joke with a laugh that you could hear from across the room. He made friends everywhere he went and will be greatly missed. 

Survivors include his wife; two sons, Derek (Marci) Showalter of Grandview, IA and Kasey (Wendy) Rider of Danville, IA; one daughter, Kelli (Kevin) Knecht of Olathe, KS; nine grandchildren, Samantha, Levi, Lee, Baylee, Katie, Macy, Wyatt, Siddalee, & Mazee;  one brother, Ronald Wesley (Inger) Showalter of Ottawa, KS; two sisters, Linda Ann (Jim) Lewis of Lawrence, KS and Kathy Jane (Danny) Norton of Estes Park, CO; one Brother-in-law, Keith Thomas of Mediapolis, IA and several nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by his parents, one sister-in-law, Judy Thomas and one nephew, Shon Showalter. 

A private  graveside service will be held in Kossuth Cemetery, in Mediapolis, IA.  Full military honors will be rendered by the Burlington Area Veterans Honor Guard.  

A memorial has been established.
